The Food Compliance Services Group at MPI are looking for a science graduate with post graduate qualifications or equivalent experience in food regulation and enforcement to join our team as a Compliance Officer (Food).  The Food Compliance team responds to food sector related incidents for the Compliance Directorate within the Operations branch of MPI.  The Compliance Directorate is responsible for the delivery of compliance and enforcement services across fisheries, biosecurity, animal welfare, food, wine, forestry and aquaculture.

 

As a Compliance Officer (Food) in the Compliance Directorate of the Operations Branch, you will investigate and resolve food related complaints, including food recalls and foodborne illness.  You will work with members of the public and the food industry to resolve a range of compliance issues as well as responding to food incidents and emergencies.

 

If you are currently appointed or have the necessary skills to be appointed as a Food Safety Officer, Wine Officer and Animal Products Officer, are passionate about food safety and you are comfortable in dealing with both industry and the public we want to hear from you.  This is an excellent opportunity to get frontline experience in a role that is varied and interesting.

We have two available positions in both Nelson and Dunedin – please state on your covering letter your location of choice.

 

The successful candidate will have:

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in food science, environmental/public health or relevant science disciplines or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in food regulation and enforcement.
  • Experience and understanding of domestic and international food safety issues.
  • Understanding of MPI’s operational role and its interface with other agencies and industry bodies.
  • Sound judgement and analytical skills, with particular emphasis on application in a regulatory and compliance environment.
  • Sound relationship management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: persuasive, able to listen to other ideas and the ability to engage others in your ideas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • A New Zealand driver’s licence.

 

The ideal candidate would also have some or all of the following:

 

  • Excellent time management and work prioritising skills.
  • Experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of MPI’s business environment, its strategic priorities, strengths and weaknesses.
  • A HACCP qualification.
