Environmental Services Manager

The South Wairarapa District Council aims to deliver regulatory services in an effective and facilitative way.  The role of the Environmental Services Manager plays a key role in this through:

  • Acting as the Council’s technical expert 

  • Ensuring that SWDC fulfils its statutory responsibilities

  • Investigating complex technical matters

  • Providing leadership for a small team

Reporting to the Group Manager, Planning & Environment, the role focuses on food safety, liquor licensing, dog control and by laws.  The job holder will be primarily working with customers and small businesses in the South Wairarapa in the towns of Martinborough, Greytown, Featherston and the surrounding district.

Key attributes for the Manager role include leadership and guidance, excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, demonstrated understanding of relevant Acts and Council policy, and conflict resolution skills.  An ability to provide solutions to regulatory matters/challenges and an ability to self-manage workloads is desired.  A high level of integrity and honesty is essential the role. 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a relevant degree or post graduate qualification or be EHO qualified

  • a minimum of 5 years’ experience, some of which should be within local government

  • sound knowledge of relevant statutes and regulations

  • experience in enforcement procedures

  • team leadership abilities

Applicants must have a full clean driver’s licence and must be eligible to work in NZ.
