NZIEH Podcast with Great.com
When you walk into a restaurant you generally don’t expect to get sick from the food. When you swim in a swimming pool you trust the chemicals in the water won’t damage your skin; and when you drink tap water in many parts of the world you don’t have to worry about it posing risks to your health.
Many people don’t know much about environmental health. We spoke to Great.com on their podcast “Great.com Talks With…” to explain what it is and what part we play in it.
The interview took place with our national president, Tanya Morrison, and spanned topics of concern such as pollution, waste and outdated legislation. This last item is one we kept coming back to as it casts a wide net on the health issues it could potentially resolve.
Tanya and podcast host Emil discuss the challenge of getting legislation right to suit modern life and making sure the way we choose to live isn’t one we can get sick from. She explains ”We've got some legislation that was written in the nineteen forties, nineteen fifties, and it doesn't always match up with how we live in today's world”, an example of that being no national legislation for tattooing in New Zealand. She reassures us by saying “that's not to say that we just want more and more rules. It's not about that. It's about making sure that people are doing things safely”.
We believe people want to do the right thing. So what can you do? We recommend small daily actions such as safe waste disposal and following your intuition about if something is safe; and please spread the message about environmental health. For the bigger things, we worry so you don’t have to.
