Environmental Health Officer - Wellington City Council

We're Working for Wellington. Wellington City Council's team provides more than 400 services every day for Wellingtonians - everything from parks and pools to consents and cemeteries - playing our part in making Pōneke an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play.

Come and join us as we work together for Wellington's future - kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō.

Public Health Team

The Public Health Team is a regulatory unit of the Wellington City Council. We process applications for food and alcohol premises, register dogs and carry out inspections to ensure public health and safety. We also provide advice to customers on a wide range of regulatory matters and monitor compliance with legislation and bylaws. We pride ourselves on giving quality and timely advice to help our customers navigate their way through the regulatory processes.

The role

As an Environmental Health Officer, you'll work with food businesses in Wellington to ensure that the food they produce is safe and suitable for their customers. You'll spend your time visiting businesses to review their registration applications, verifying their operations and ensuring compliance with the relevant bylaws and legislation.

You will get exposure to the food industry, create some great networks as well as be involved in other environmental related complaints regarding smoke, rubbish etc. It's a great role where you'll be given autonomy for the allocated work, as well as the opportunity to work with and learn from a skilled team.

The nature of our work requires our Officers to occasionally respond to events during the weekend and primarily during event seasons (Feb - April). Officers are also on-call every 6-8 weeks for one week at a time. We like to compensate this by offering flexibility and can assure you that you'll be remunerated fairly.

So who are we looking for?

We are wanting to hear from those with a degree Environmental Health Science, Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health Science (or equivalent), or nearing completion of either of these. You may be a graduate or have a few years under your belt within the field and now have the desire to become a Environmental Health Officer. You'll also need to have a full NZ driver licence to be able to drive Council vehicles and respond to any call-outs.

You'll bring a passion for food safety with the ability to build trusting and credible relationships with your customers. You'll need great time management and be comfortable completing site visits and addressing issues with a range of stakeholders - primarily restaurant owners and those working in the hospitality industry.

A big focus of our team is to take the approach of educating first, so you'll need to have a sound understanding of Food Act 2014 and Food Regulations 2015, able to communicate effectively to find practical solutions. You'll enjoy working both independently and within a team with an openness to learn and share your own knowledge too.
